Reusable Drinking Straws

Xero is moving from Rackspace to AWS to enable future growth – what does this mean for clean data?

What is AWS?

AWS is Amazon Web Services. They provide cloud platform services to companies like Netflix, Airbnb, Expedia, Adobe and many, many more.

Are AWS committed to sustainability?

Yes, they have a long-term commitment to achieve 100% renewable energy usage for their global infrastructure footprint. Click here to read about their Sustainability plans.

They aren’t ranking too well yet however, about middle of the pack – As of April 2015, they were at 25% which isn’t so good – but was neck and neck with Rackspace. AWS aim to reach 40% by the end of 2016 – which is huge improvement, but there is still a huge amount of room for improvement. For example, in the first half of 2015 – Apple was at 100%, Facebook were at 49%, Google was at 46%.

Starship Foundation – Mobile Phone Appeal

In an effort to find better ways of dealing with unwanted waste, I’ve found Starship Foundations website appealing for mobile phones.

Starship Foundation remove and destroy SIM cards, then wipe information off the handsets. Most mobile phones still have a useful life and are refurbished and resold into third world countries. Phones that can no longer be used are broken down and recycled.

Every old mobile that is recycled helps to prevent hazardous, toxic substances from entering our precious environment.

Check out Sustainable Business Networks blog about making events more sustainable. There are some good things in there. Maybe try implementing at least one? The ones we will use at our Katalyst Christmas Party 2014 are:

Choose a venue close to our team (at my house, down the road from the office)
Use reusables, rather than disposables
No bottled water
Reuse last years Christmas decorations
Buy from the Yealands wine range
Use Eco products for cleaning
